This is a follow on from our articles of 15 April 2019, 14 May 2019 & 29 August 2019. New information will be BOLD IN CAPITALS.

The following information has been provided to us:-

Furosemide [frusemide] 40 mg tablets (Diurin 40) supply issue – removal of stat and short expiry date.

Mylan is discontinuing supply of its Diurin 40 tablets – furosemide tab 40 mg Pharmacode 282014. The current stat (all at once) dispensing patterns means that we would expect supplies of Diurin 40 to be exhausted before the new Tender brand (Apotex) is listed on 1 October 2019.

To extend the availability of the remaining stock, we are asking pharmacists to dispense Diurin 40 tablets in lots of one month until further notice. We are considering formally removing stat (all-at-once) dispensing, however this would not be able to take effect until 1 July 2019.

The remaining stock of Diurin 40 has an expiry date of 30 September 2019. We have confirmed with Mylan that this stock can be safely used until 30 September 2019. You may continue to dispense, however the amount supplied to a patient should not exceed that required for use past the expiry date of the product.

The new Tender brand, supplied by Apotex, is due to be listed from 1 October 2019. Furosemide-Apo Tab 40 mg 1000 Pharmacode 2565781 was listed from 1 August 2019 in anticipation of being available early.

PHARMAC are working with Apotex in an endeavor to bring listing date and supply forward. Stock is expected to be available within the next two weeks.


Furosemide Milan Tab 40 mg 1000 (Section 29) Pharmacode 2572656 from Link Pharmaceuticals supply has been delayed but should available later next week.


PHARMAC is activating rule 5.5 to allow more frequent dispensing of furosemide 40 mg tablets to assist in managing this supply issue. This means that: 

  • Pharmacists may dispense furosemide 40 mg tablets more frequently, until further notice.
  • Pharmacist may use their discretion in relation to the quantity or period of supply dispensed
  • Pharmacists must annotate the prescription with “out of stock” or “oos” and initial the annotation, as required by rule 5.5.2.

Pharmacy need to make decisions on what they can do in respect to the dispensing of Furosemide Tab 40 mg over the next couple of weeks.


1 – Continue to dispense Diurin Tab 40 mg 1000 but only dispensing sufficient to ensure all tablets are used by patients before expiry date of 30 September 2019 – recommended as this will mean only one brand change for patients.

2 – Furosemide Milan Tab 40 mg 1000 Section 29 Pharmacode 2572656 . This product being supplied under Section 29 allows wastage to be claimed once. Please note this product will be delisted 1 November 2019. AVAILABLE NOW ON A PROCURE BASIS

3 – By following Option 1, you can then make one change for the patient and not two, when the Furosemide-Apo Tab 40 mg 1000 Pharmacode 2565781 is available. AVAILABLE EARLY WEEK COMMENCING 9 SEPTEMBER 2019
